Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 Is Starting to Look a Little Like a Motorola Razr

Spread the love

The week has been all about smartphones, particularly ones that fold up and that we’ve yet to see. Samsung’s display division showed off concept devices on the MWC 2025 show floor, while over in rumor land, we’re trying to figure out if Samsung’s next-generation flip phone will take after a surprising favorite, 2024’s Motorola Razr+.

New Galaxy Z Flip 7 renders have started circulating among the popular, oft-cited hardware leakers. OnLeaks and Android Headlines published a report with the alleged images. The inside of the supposed Galaxy Z Flip 7 looks pretty standard compared to where we are now. Specifications include a 6.8-inch inner display, about a tenth of an inch longer than the Z Flip 6, and a larger 3.6-inch cover screen display extending to the edges, up from 3.4 inches. The numbers sound menial, but even the slightest bump up of screen space can help make a touchscreen device feel more responsive.

A look at the potential Samsung Z Flip 7.

It’s about time that Samsung went full-display on the Z Flip’s cover screen. It’s one of the favorite parts of the Motorola Razr+, which was designed after the brand’s famous Razr cellphone in the early aughts. A larger cover screen means less of a reason to open up the flip phone. From what I understand, having spoken to Z Flip owners, the whole point of the compact design is that the phone should stay closed until it’s necessary to open it. That’s how Motorola’s phone works and why accessory makers like Clicks, which makes a pop-on keyboard case, utilize the existing form factor to market a new kind of usage. That larger cover screen is essential for people who want access to a specific app or two on the fly.

It doesn’t feel as essential to open the phone as often as the Galaxy Z Fold, Samsung’s book-style foldable. There are rumblings that the Z Fold 7‘s cover screen will extend out a bit versus the cramped and narrow 6.3-inch cover screen there now. Thinness is also on the docket for Samsung’s Z Fold.

Other rumored specifications for the Z Flip 7 include a bigger battery. That would give the Z Flip 7 a 4,300 mAh battery compared to the 4,000 mAh pack in the Z Flip 6. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is slated to be on the Z Flip 7’s specification sheet, which makes sense considering that’s Samsung’s usual cadence for updating the silicon. We don’t expect to see Samsung’s foldables until later this year. Once rumors start to pick up on the iPhone 17—when they start bordering on certainty—they will get even more detailed about Samsung’s foldables, both the Z Flip and the Z Fold.
