Invincible’s Finale Flipped One of The Walking Dead’s Most Famous Moments

What’s the most famous moment in the history of The Walking Dead? Everyone has their opinion but the overwhelming majority would likely say the season six finale/season seven premiere moment of Negan beating Glenn to death with his baseball bat. And while Glenn’s friends and family eventually forgave Negan, Glenn never got his revenge. Because he was dead. In a meta twist though, he got his shot on this week’s Invincible.

The third season finale of Invincible is now on Prime Video and in it, we get a rematch between Glenn and Negan… sort of. Glenn was played by Steven Yeun, who voices Invincible on the show, and Negan was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, recently introduced as the deadly Conquest on the show. In the season three finale, Invincible and Conquest have the biggest, most violent battle on the show since Invincible fought his father, Omni-Man. This time though, Invincible wins, with a little help from Atom Eve. It’s Glenn finally getting his revenge on Negan but, according to Kirkman, that was never a part of the equation.

“I don’t think it ruins the episode or anything, but I think it enhances things and puts an extra level of stakes on it,” Kirkman told Variety. “For anybody who’s a longtime Walking Dead fan, it’s a nice bit of justice.

That there would be justice for Glenn didn’t factor into casting Morgan either. “I’m always trying to find roles for the actors that I know and love and want to work with again,” Kirkman said. “I’m always trying to find something for Jeffrey. When he started showing up on The Boys, I couldn’t let Eric Kripke have all the fun. At some point, it became, ‘When we get to Conquest, Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be perfect for that.’ I didn’t hesitate just because there is the meta of it all like, ‘Oh, it’s the rematch between Glenn and Negan, and now Glenn gets to win.’ Something about it seemed fun and interesting. You worry about those kind of things taking people out of the show, but once you’re in it and you’re paying attention, it’s not necessarily something that occurs to you.”

What occurs to us is that, even with Conquest “defeated” a new villain may have arisen. Kirkman reveals that the mid-credits scene of the finale, featuring Damien Darkblood (voiced by Clancy Brown) and an evil being voiced by Bruce Campbell, is teasing a dark storyline he was never able to get to in the Invincible comics.

“There’s a storyline from the comic that I never got around to doing,” Kirkman said. “Every superhero story has some chapter where they go to hell and they fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comics. It’s a big deal. I never got around to doing anything like that in Invincible. I kept getting sidetracked and there was never a good time. So it’s entirely possible that we may be doing something like that in the show, and that scene at the end of that episode is setting that up. Oh my God, and we got to work with Bruce Campbell. It’s the best.”
