The First Look at DC’s Lanterns Show Is Unexpectedly Grounded

When you think of Green Lantern you think of, well, green. You think of magic rings. You think of skintight suits, people flying through space, and maybe some big, giant, hammer or something. What you don’t think of is the first image James Gunn just revealed from DC’s upcoming show, Lanterns: Two dudes, standing on the street, looking like hell. And almost no green at all.

Which, of course, is what makes it so interesting. Lanterns, created by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen, Leftovers), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) stars Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Hal Jordan. Though they’re members of the intergalactic law enforcement agency know as the Green Lantern Corps, the show will follow Stewart and Chandler investigating something on Earth, hence the looks here. But you can bet they’ve got their rings on too (In fact, you can see it on Chandler’s right hand if you look closely.)

Surely, this isn’t the look of the entire show though. We can assume that some of Lanterns will have that cosmic whimsy we know from the comics, animation and, yes, even live-action movie. But since the show has just started filming in recent weeks, and is largely Earth based, this is all DC Studios is ready to show. But it’s also very in line with the reported tone.

“They have been doing marvelous work,” Gunn recently said about the team making the show. “I’ve been watching the dailies with that. It’s so cool because it is connected to Superman because we’ve got Guy Gardner [another Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion] in that. And then we’ve got these Green Lanterns over here. And it’s just such a different tone from what Superman is. And it’s exactly what I want to bring to the DCU, is being able to have these very different films and television series that are still part of an overall connected world, but have completely different feels for them.”

The first season, which doesn’t have a release date (but you’d imagine would be sometime next spring), will be eight episodes and could continue into further seasons. But, with stars like Pierre and Chandler, you also have to imagine they could eventually appear on the big screen too.
